How long does a bike chain last? Most guides answer "it depends on use". We have measured it across thousands of serviced bikes, and the answer is more precise than that – and it depends above all on two things: whether the bike has electric assist, and whether it has derailleur or hub gears.
This article covers the fundamentals of bike maintenance: what wears out, when, and what you can do yourself to extend the life of your components.
The short answer
A new bike's first service is done after 300–500 km, and after that an annual service once a year. The chain is replaced based on wear percentage, not mileage: a chain due for replacement has stretched by roughly 0.65–0.75%. Chain life is extended most by correct gear use, regular cleaning and the right chain lubricant.
The first service – the most important service a new bike gets
During the first hours of riding, a bike's components settle into place: the spokes of machine-built wheels bed in, cables stretch into their end ferrules, and bearings find their seats. After a few hours of riding the bike no longer works quite as precisely as it did when new.
If these shortcomings aren't adjusted in time, they get worse. At worst the result is a dangerous situation or damage, in which case the warranty may be void for those parts.

How long does a chain last? Our workshop's findings
The chain is the drivetrain's sacrificial component: it stretches with use and starts reshaping the sprocket teeth to match its own worn profile. Based on our long service experience, a chain typically lasts:

Two things stand out. An e-bike chain lasts about a third less than the equivalent regular bike, because the motor's torque loads the chain. And a hub-geared bike is clearly more trouble-free, because the chainline is straight and the chain doesn't flex sideways.
There is considerable variation in these figures. They are affected by which gears you use, the load – rider and luggage weight – chain cleanliness, the lubricant used, the terrain profile and your riding style.
Measure wear, not mileage
Mileage is only indicative. The real measure is chain elongation, measured with a chain wear gauge:
- 0.00–0.25% – a new chain
- 0.65–0.75% – a chain due for replacement
- over 0.75% – the sprockets have probably also adapted to the worn chain
If the chain has worn past the limit, a new chain will no longer sit correctly on worn sprockets. The first symptom is the chain skipping over the sprocket teeth under load. At that point the sprockets have to be replaced too, and the bill multiplies.
A chain wear gauge is an inexpensive tool available from any well-stocked bike shop. Using it takes ten seconds.
How to maximise chain life
Using the gears correctly
This is the single most important factor, and it is the one most often got wrong. Bikes – and especially e-bikes – are commonly ridden in high gears at a low pedalling speed, or cadence. That wears the chain prematurely.
Gears should be used so that your pedalling speed stays roughly constant regardless of your road speed. The optimal cadence is around 70–90 revolutions per minute – slightly faster than one pedal revolution per second.
The chainline should also be as straight as possible while riding. Cross-chaining – for example the smallest chainring with the smallest sprocket – wears the chain quickly. In this respect using an e-bike is no different from a regular bike, even though the motor is doing part of the work.
Cleaning and lubrication
In daily use, a derailleur bike's drivetrain should be cleaned roughly every one to two weeks, or whenever the chain starts to look dirty and mark your clothes.
Clean the chain and sprockets with a drivetrain degreaser and a brush. Once no more black dirt comes off onto your fingers or a rag, it's ready to lubricate.
Choose chain lube to match conditions:
- Wet lube doesn't wash off in rain, but attracts dust in dry conditions.
- Dry lube doesn't attract dust, but washes off easily in rain.
- Cold-weather lube is needed in hard frost, because ordinary oil is no longer fluid enough below zero.
Avoid spray-on chain lube. With a spray it's easy to lubricate the things you didn't mean to lubricate – brake rotors, for example. An oiled rotor may stop braking altogether, and fixing it requires cleaning the rotor and fitting new pads. Apply lube to the chain only, turn the cranks for a moment, then wipe off the excess with a rag.
A pressure washer is a useful tool, but don't aim it directly at bearings, hub gears, electrical components or derailleurs.
Tyre pressure
Tyre pressure has the single largest effect on how a bike rides. Too low a pressure noticeably slows you down on tarmac and destroys the tyre casing quickly. Too high a pressure can damage the tyre and makes riding uncomfortable, because every bump in the road is transmitted straight to the rider.
Recommended pressures are marked on the tyre sidewall. Check pressures every couple of weeks. A floor pump with a gauge is worth buying for this – reaching the right pressure with a hand pump is hard work.
Suspension service intervals
Service intervals for a modern mountain bike's suspension components are based on hours of use, not kilometres.

A lower-leg service replaces the oil in the lower legs and the external dust seals. A full service also replaces the damper oil and seals, and on an air fork the air spring seals.
The harder you ride, the more often service is needed – in some cases considerably more often than the manufacturer's recommendation. For some manufacturers, following the service intervals is also a warranty condition.
When is a service overdue?
A good rule of thumb: a well-maintained bicycle is silent. If you hear extra noises coming from the bike, it's time for a service.
These signs won't wait for the next annual service:
- the brake lever pulls to the bar, or braking power is weak
- the chain skips over the sprocket teeth under load
- a click or grinding sound repeats in time with your pedal stroke
- the steering feels loose or notchy
- oil marks appear on the suspension stanchions
- there is a crack or dent in the frame or fork
What can you do yourself?
- Clean and lubricate the chain every 200–300 km, and weekly in winter
- Check tyre pressures every couple of weeks
- Visually check brake pad wear
- Wash the bike, especially after salted road conditions
- Check bolt tightness – but beware of overtightening
Leave wheel truing, bearing service, hydraulic brake bleeding, suspension service and anything involving an e-bike motor to a professional.
Frequently asked questions
How many kilometres does a bike chain last?
Based on our service experience: 800–1,000 km on a derailleur-geared e-bike, 1,000–1,500 km on a derailleur-geared regular bike, 1,000–1,500 km on a hub-geared e-bike and 1,500–2,000 km on a hub-geared regular bike. The most reliable measure is still a wear gauge.
Why does an e-bike chain wear faster?
The motor's torque loads the chain and sprockets considerably more than legs alone. E-bikes are also often ridden in high gears at low cadence, which accelerates wear.
When should a chain be replaced?
When the wear gauge reads around 0.65–0.75%. Beyond 0.75% the sprockets have probably worn too, so replacing the chain alone won't be enough.

Bike maintenance isn't complicated, but it is regular. Three things account for most of it: correct cadence, a clean and lubricated chain, and a replacement point measured with a wear gauge.
With those three, a drivetrain lasts many times longer than a neglected one – and a well-maintained bike is also safer and more pleasant to ride.
