People consider buying an e-bike on price, then hesitate over the running costs. "What about when the battery needs replacing?" is a question we hear every week in the shop.

We worked it out with real figures. The surprise isn't the battery – it's the electricity. A year's riding costs about five euros.

The short answer

An e-bike's annual cost is typically €250–400 if you ride around 3,000 kilometres a year. The largest item is the annual service, the second largest wear parts. Electricity amounts to a few euros a year, and battery wear is spread over such a long period that it works out at around one and a half cents per kilometre. The cost per kilometre lands at roughly 10–13 cents.

Electricity: about five euros a year

This figure astonishes most people. A full charge of a 500 watt-hour battery consumes around 0.5 kilowatt-hours, so one charge costs roughly 8–15 cents depending on your electricity price.

If you ride 3,000 kilometres a year and get around 80 kilometres per charge, that's about 38 charges. A year's electricity therefore costs around €3–6.

For comparison: the same distance by car would consume around 200 litres of fuel.

The battery lasts longer than you think

Battery life is measured in charge cycles, not years. One charge cycle means one full charge and discharge – two half charges make one cycle.

Quality manufacturers' batteries typically last 500–1,000 charge cycles, and after 500 cycles a battery usually retains 60–80% of its original capacity. So the battery doesn't stop working; its range gradually shortens.

Here's the key insight. If you ride 3,000 kilometres a year and use around 38 charges a year, the 500-cycle mark arrives only after about 13 years. In practice, for an ordinary commuter, the battery ages from calendar time rather than use.

Spread across kilometres – say a €600 battery and 500 cycles at 80 km each, so 40,000 kilometres – the battery works out at around 1.5 cents per kilometre.

Check the warranties

Battery warranty terms differ significantly. Shimano batteries, for example, carry a separate 1,000 charge cycle warranty against premature capacity loss: if capacity drops below 60% within that, the customer gets a new battery. Other manufacturers include mileage or charge count limits in their warranties.

Always ask about warranty terms when buying a bike – they're a concrete difference between manufacturers and one that easily goes unasked.

Servicing and wear parts – the real cost

An e-bike is heavy and fast, which wears brakes, tyres and drivetrain considerably faster than on an ordinary bike. Here's our workshop price list for the jobs an e-bike typically needs:

That works out at around 10.5 cents per kilometre. Ride more and the per-kilometre cost falls, because the annual service is a fixed cost.

A car's cost per kilometre, all costs included, is typically many times that. If an e-bike replaces a second car, the comparison isn't remotely close.

How to reduce the costs

Wash the bike after salted conditions. Road salt destroys drivetrains many times faster. Rinsing costs nothing and can save a hundred-euro drivetrain repair.

Measure the chain in time. A chain replaced in time saves the cassette and chainrings. This is the single biggest saving available in e-bike upkeep.

Charge between 20 and 80 percent. A lithium battery is happier with partial charges than kept permanently full. There's no need to run it flat before charging.

Don't charge a cold battery. Let a battery that's been out in freezing conditions warm up indoors for a couple of hours first. Charging a cold battery causes permanent cell damage – the most expensive single mistake an e-bike rider can make.

Store the battery correctly over winter. Remove it from the bike, bring it indoors and keep the charge at around 30–60%. Check the charge level once a month.

Winter and battery range

In freezing conditions range typically drops by 20–30%, and more in hard frost. This is normal chemistry and doesn't damage the battery – range returns as the weather warms.

In cold weather, fit the battery to the bike just before setting off and keep it indoors the rest of the time. A neoprene battery cover helps somewhat.

If the bike is going to stand over winter, we store it in our heated, insured warehouse and service it ready for spring. Winter storage costs €79, or €39 for Klubi members, and the storage season runs from 30 September to 30 March.

Yes. Studded tyres on both wheels, battery indoors for charging, and a rinse after salted conditions – with those, an e-bike is an excellent year-round commuting machine.

Summary

An e-bike's running cost isn't the battery – it's servicing and wear parts. The battery costs around one and a half cents per kilometre and electricity a vanishingly small amount.

All told, roughly 10–13 cents per kilometre is the price of getting where you're going year-round without parking or traffic jams. And most of it can be kept in check one way: by servicing the bike in time.
