Replacing a chain costs €25. Replacing a chain and cassette together costs €40 plus parts – and the parts are the expensive bit.
The difference between those two situations is usually a few hundred kilometres. The chain is a wear component designed to be replaced. Replace it in time and the rest of the drivetrain survives. Leave it, and a stretched chain takes the cassette and chainrings with it.

An annual bike service costs €100–165 with us depending on the bike type, and a light service €99. Individual jobs start from €20. Prices cover labour; parts are billed separately. A bike in active use should be serviced once a year, and an e-bike or year-round commuter twice.

Chain wear – the cheapest service you can buy
The chain is the drivetrain's sacrificial component. It stretches with use, and a stretched chain starts reshaping the cassette teeth to match its own worn profile. Once a cassette has worn to match a chain, a new chain no longer sits on it properly and skips under load.
Chain wear is measured with a wear gauge, and the thresholds are roughly these:
- 0.5% – on 11 and 12-speed drivetrains, replace the chain at this point
- 0.75% – the replacement threshold on 10-speed and fewer
- 1.0% – at this stage the cassette has probably gone too
Modern 11 and 12-speed drivetrains are narrower and wear faster than older ones, so the threshold is tighter.
Winter accelerates wear many times over. Road salt and grit act as grinding paste in the chain's links, and in year-round commuting a chain can wear out completely in a single winter.
What actually happens in an annual service?
An annual service is more than adjustment. It typically includes:
- gear and brake adjustment, and cable inspection where needed
- bearing inspection: headset, bottom bracket, hubs
- chain and cassette wear measurement
- wheel trueness and spoke tension check
- visual inspection of frame and fork
- torquing all fasteners to specification
- lubrication and cleaning
An e-bike service also includes system diagnostics, a software update and a battery health check. That's why an e-bike annual service costs slightly more.
When should you book?
February or March. This is the most practical advice in the whole article.
In April and May, workshop queues across the industry stretch to weeks, because everyone realises at once on the first sunny weekend. A service done in winter is completed quickly and your bike is ready the moment the weather turns.
Autumn is the other good time. The bike gets ready for winter before the salt starts, and if it's going to stand over the winter, it won't corrode unserviced.
What can you do yourself?
These are worth learning, because they affect the bike's condition most between services:
- Clean and lubricate the chain every 200–300 km, and weekly in winter
- Tyre pressures every couple of weeks
- Visual brake pad wear check
- Washing the bike after salted conditions
Leave bearings, wheel truing, hydraulic brake bleeding, suspension service and anything involving an e-bike motor to a professional.
When does a bike need attention immediately?
These signs won't wait for the next annual service:
- the brake lever pulls to the bar, or the brake doesn't stop you
- the chain skips under load
- a click or grinding sound repeats in time with your pedal stroke
- the steering feels loose or notchy
- there is a crack or dent in the frame or fork

When should a chain be replaced?
When the wear gauge reads 0.5% on 11 and 12-speed drivetrains, or 0.75% on fewer speeds. A chain replaced in time saves the cassette and chainrings.
How quickly can I get a service appointment?
In winter and early spring, quickly. April and May are the busiest months across the industry, so a spring service is best booked in February or March.
Why does an e-bike service cost more?
Because it includes system diagnostics, a software update and a battery health check on top of the usual service work. An e-bike is also heavier and puts more load on brakes and drivetrain.
Summary
Bike servicing isn't a cost – it's a way of avoiding a bigger one. A €25 chain replacement made in time prevents the situation where the chain, cassette and chainrings all need replacing at once.
A serviced bike is also safer and holds its value better. And most importantly: it's more pleasant to ride.
